About our Project
Imagine a world in which all houses or businesses are owned collectively, and every member has an equal voice. These collectives are fast becoming a reality. From businesses to homes, cooperatives are fascinating microcosms of life that affect one in four people in the United States. We are a group of filmmakers on a mission to explore housing cooperatives from Texas around the US and back: starting at college co-ops and following the whole co-op housing life cycle - cohousing, ecovillages, postgrad houses, senior living, and beyond.
Our intrepid film team, ourselves members of co-ops, will be documenting many diverse communities around the United States who participate in this unique way of life. More than just a housing choice, cooperatives have the ability to provide jobs, autonomy, and a sense of family to anybody. They are a social experience which helps members mature, a cost-saving mechanism, a successful experiment in self-governance, and environmental option that can help save the planet.
We plan on not just exploring co-ops but also on utilizing the powerful creativity of cooperative members as we put together our film. From music to animation, this project will be driven by the talent and generosity of the individuals we meet on our journey. By the end of the 90-minute film, we will not just introduce you to a variety of colorful personalities and vignettes; we will show you how the cooperative lifestyle is fast changing the very fabric of our culture.
